Thinking about skipping out on meat and dairy? Going vegan is becoming increasingly more common, but is it actually good for you?

What happens to your body when you go vegan?

Thinking of making the jump to a vegan diet? You’re not alone.

In your first few weeks, you may feel especially tired. Without meat, vegans often have a hard time getting enough vitamin B12 and iron, which helps make red blood cells and transport oxygen throughout the body. But it’s nothing a supplement or handful of nuts can’t fix.

You may also discover that foods don’t taste the way they used to. That’s because your zinc levels have taken a hit, affecting your overall sense of taste and smell.

On the plus side, expect to lose some weight right away! After switching, new vegans lost an average of 10 pounds over a 10 month period. Plus, a 2009 study found that average BMI was lower for vegans than all other diets.

Another benefit that you may experience is a healthy decrease in cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart disease risk. In 1999, a study showed that vegans were 24% less likely to have clogged arteries from saturated fat and cholesterol.

While your arteries are better off, your bones may not be. If you’re like most Americans who get their daily calcium from dairy products, you may see a dip in calcium levels.

But you can combat this simply by boosting your intake of kale, broccoli, and other leafy greens. Plus, cutting out dairy might make you more … regular. 60% of humans don’t have the enzyme to properly digest lactose in dairy. The result is cramping, bloating, and even diarrhea. Swapping dairy with high fiber veggies will make bathroom trips a lot more productive.

Like any diet, veganism has its pros and cons. Be sure to research and see which diet is best for you.

Dr Michael Greger - How Not To Die

Michael Herschel Greger (born 1972) is an American physician, author, and professional speaker on public health issues, particularly the benefits of a whole foods, plant-based, healthy diet and the harms of eating animal products.

In his lectures, videos, and writings about nutrition he tries to persuade people to change their eating habits from a Western pattern diet to a whole foods, plant-based, healthy diet—optimally to vegan diet—and says that such a diet can prevent and reverse many chronic diseases. He is critical of other doctors for not challenging their patients to adopt plant-based diets and to avoid animal-based products and criticises the US government for giving watered-down advice about healthy eating in its guidelines, in order to protect the economic interests of food producers—especially those who make junk food or produce animal-based food.

A brief climate change video essay on the environmental impacts of veganism, and how we can reframe going vegan less as a lifestyle and more as an aspiration. While eating a plant-based diet does greatly reduce your carbon footprint due to the meat industry's rampant fossil fuels use, going vegan is sometimes not accessible to all.

Have you joined the vegan fashion movement yet? Over the years, fashion trends have been changing all around the world. In recent years, we have witnessed the growth of a new era in fashion. Ever heard of "Vegan Fashion" ?

Vegan fashion is entirely cruelty-free. The main goal of vegan fashion is to stop animal cruelty caused by the industry. The leather that we use comes from the skin of pigs, cows, or even alligators. Animal fur also comes from the skin of beavers, coyotes, lambs, rabbits and foxes. The objective of vegan fashion brands is to eradicate such animal cruelty by offering cruelty-free and vegan substitutes for these materials. Many brands are going in this direction and producing cruelty-free vegan fashion.

Giving up meat, dairy and other food from animals is the biggest change vegans make to their lives. However, more vegans are now extending their beliefs to fashion. There is a big increase in the sales of vegan clothing, footwear and accessories. Vegan fashion that has transformed the fashion industry and is constantly proving that it is here to stay. Veganism promotes the use of sustainable, environmentally friendly and cruelty-free living habits. From the food we eat to the clothes we wear to the products we buy and the businesses we support, every choice we make is a statement.

Global organizations like PETA have reported large scale animal abuse for the sake of fashion. The leather industry especially is filled with labor abuse, lack of regulations, tanneries employing child labor and endangering the community and workers with toxic chemicals. Due to public campaigns and demand from consumers for transparency and accountability, the fashion world has now adopted a more compassionate approach.

Making the switch to vegan fashion isn’t as complicated and as expensive as many think. Replacements for conventional animal-based materials produced in nature-friendly ways, are gaining pace. A major shift in fashion production is underway, with a swell in the number of fashion brands experimenting with so-called next-generation materials like vegan leather. With the rising popularity of veganism globally, especially after the pandemic, a new side of fashion i.e. vegan fashion is becoming more and more relevant.

And on this episode we had a fabulous talk with Angie Bell, actress, animal activist, host & spokesmodel of The Vegan Fashion Show on first time here in Toronto, Canada.

Some claim vegan pet food may be less palatable, or may compromise animal welfare. But are such claims actually true? In 2020 we surveyed dog or cat guardians asking about behaviours displayed by their pets at meal times. Analysis of the behaviour of 2,308 dogs and 1,135 cats revealed no significant differences overall, between animals fed vegan or meat-based diets (conventional or raw meat). Our results indicate that vegan pet foods are generally at least as palatable to dogs and cats as conventional meat or raw meat diets, and do not compromise their welfare, when other welfare determinants, such as nutritional requirements, are adequately provided. Full study: Knight A and Satchell L (2021). Vegan versus meat-based pet foods: OOwner-reported palatability behaviours and implications for canine and feline welfare.

In the era of combatting rapid climate change, meat & dairy are getting the worst press: in particular, we've been seeing beef getting slashed everywhere for its methane emissions - cow burps and farts. So we are increasingly being told that switching to a vegan/plant-based diet is the solution to climate change. But is it really the case? Because popular vegan foods like avocados, soy and almonds do cause massive environmental destruction. So how could eating regional plant-based foods be potentially less environmentally damaging than eating local and organic meat & dairy? In this video, I will be explaining and debunking various claims made around veganism and plant based diets using life-cycle assessment.

I am a vegan/animal rights and environmental/climate activist, and I share various educational content on veganism and plant-based living - the ethics, environment, climate change, and nonhuman & human rights issues, as well as easy vegan/plant-based recipes.
